EMG (Electromyography) Test

Electromyography (EMG) is a test that checks the health of your muscles and the nerves that control them. A very thin needle electrode is placed into selected muscles to record their electrical activity, both at rest and when you tighten the muscle.

EMG helps find out whether weakness, pain, cramps or numbness is caused by a muscle disease, a nerve problem, or a problem where the nerve root leaves the spine. It is usually done together with a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS).

Consult Dr. Soumya Arapreddy, MD, DM Neurology, Consultant Neurologist, for EMG testing and expert interpretation in Hyderabad.

Why is an EMG Test Done?

Your neurologist may advise EMG if you have:

  • Muscle weakness or wasting
  • Muscle cramps, twitching or stiffness
  • Numbness, tingling or pain in the arms or legs
  • Back or neck pain spreading to the limbs (radiculopathy / pinched nerve)
  • Suspected myopathy or muscular dystrophy
  • Suspected motor neuron disease (ALS)
  • Nerve injury after trauma
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) or peripheral neuropathy
How to Prepare for an EMG
  • Bathe on the day of the test. Do not apply lotion, cream or oil on your arms and legs.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Take your usual medicines. Tell the doctor if you take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, or have a pacemaker.
  • Bring previous reports, scans and a list of your medicines.
What Happens During the Test?

The skin is cleaned and a very fine, sterile, single-use needle electrode is inserted into the muscle being tested. The doctor watches and listens to the muscle’s electrical activity while you relax, and then while you gently tighten the muscle. Several muscles may be tested depending on your symptoms.

EMG and NCS together usually take about 30–60 minutes.

Is EMG Painful? Is it Safe?

Most patients feel only mild discomfort, similar to a small pinprick, while the needle is placed. Slight soreness or a small bruise may be present for a day. EMG is a safe test, and you can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.

Understanding Your EMG Results

Healthy muscle is electrically quiet at rest. Abnormal activity at rest, or abnormal patterns when the muscle contracts, can show whether the problem is in the nerve, the nerve root, the muscle, or the junction between them. Dr. Soumya Arapreddy combines these findings with your NCS results and examination to reach an accurate diagnosis.
