EEG (Electroencephalogram) Test

An Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a safe and painless test that records the electrical activity of the brain. Small metal discs called electrodes are placed on the scalp, and they pick up the tiny electrical signals that brain cells use to communicate. These signals are recorded as wave patterns that a neurologist studies.

EEG is the most important test for diagnosing epilepsy and seizure disorders, and it also helps in evaluating unexplained blackouts, confusion, sleep problems and other brain conditions.

Consult Dr. Soumya Arapreddy, MD, DM Neurology, Consultant Neurologist, for EEG testing and expert interpretation in Hyderabad.

Why is an EEG Test Done?

Your neurologist may advise an EEG to help diagnose or monitor:

  • Epilepsy, fits and seizures
  • Unexplained fainting, blackouts or “spells”
  • Febrile seizures and staring spells in children
  • Confusion, altered behaviour or memory problems
  • Brain infections such as encephalitis
  • Head injury and brain function after a stroke
  • Sleep disorders
  • Response to anti-seizure medicines
Types of EEG
1. Routine EEG

A recording of about 20–40 minutes while you rest quietly with your eyes open and closed.

2. Sleep-Deprived EEG

You are asked to sleep less the night before, as some seizure-related changes show up more clearly when you are drowsy or asleep.

3. Video EEG

The EEG is recorded together with video, so that any event or seizure can be matched with the brain-wave changes at that moment.

4. Prolonged / Ambulatory EEG

A longer recording over several hours or days to capture events that do not happen during a short test.

How to Prepare for an EEG
  • Wash your hair the night before or on the morning of the test. Do not apply oil, gel, cream or hair spray.
  • Continue your regular medicines, including anti-seizure medicines, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
  • Eat normally. Avoid tea, coffee and other caffeine on the day of the test.
  • If a sleep-deprived EEG is advised, follow the sleep instructions given to you.
  • Bring your previous reports and a list of your medicines.
What Happens During the Test?

You will lie down or sit in a comfortable chair. About 20 electrodes are placed on your scalp using a soft paste. You will be asked to relax, keep still, and open and close your eyes when told.

The technician may also ask you to breathe deeply and quickly for a few minutes (hyperventilation) and look at a flashing light (photic stimulation). These simple steps can bring out abnormal brain-wave patterns. You may fall asleep during the test, which is helpful.

A routine EEG takes about 45–60 minutes, including setting up. After the test, the paste is cleaned off and you can go back to your normal activities.

Is EEG Safe?

Yes. EEG only records signals from your brain. No electricity is passed into your body and there is no pain or radiation. In people with epilepsy, a seizure can rarely occur during the test. If this happens, trained staff will take care of you, and the recording can actually help in diagnosis.

Understanding Your EEG Results

Dr. Soumya Arapreddy studies your EEG along with your symptoms and examination. An abnormal EEG may show seizure-related activity (epileptiform discharges) or slowing of brain waves. A normal EEG does not always rule out epilepsy, so sometimes a repeat, sleep or video EEG is needed.
